From the vision of an idyllic retirement lifestyle
that began with the opening of Sun City in 1960, to the reality of the
country’s finest active adult community, Sun City West sits as one of
the crown jewels of Del Webb’s planned developments.
Buoyed by the phenomenal success of neighboring Sun City, the developer
improved upon many of the features and amenities that characterized the
earlier community. Sun City West is now home to some 32,000 residents.
Sun City West as an active adult retirement community, also is age
restricted. One resident of each household must be at least 55 years of
age with no one under the age of 19 as a full time resident.
Recreational amenities include four regulation and three executive golf
courses, 27 tennis courts, indoor and outdoor walking tracks, racquet
and handball courts, bocce and lawn bowling, shuffleboard, billiards,
softball, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a 30-lane bowling center,
and four multi-million dollar recreation centers.
Every homeowner is a member of the Recreation Centers of Sun City West.
They and their guests can enjoy unlimited use of all of the varied
facilities.
Even if you don’t play golf, residents will find some 100 clubs to
satisfy virtually any interest or hobby, from arts and crafts and model
railroads to lapidary, equestrian and classic cars. In addition, there
are many social clubs and chapters of most national and international
service clubs.
One of those community creations was the Sun City West
Foundation, which gave residents a name under which they could
sponsor housing for community projects. The SCWF currently
provides facilities for Helping Hands, meeting rooms, AARP Tax
Services, Thrift Shop, Interfaith Adult Day Care Center,
Luminarias, PRIDES and Voluntary Placement Services. |
These
organizations allow Sun City West residents to borrow medical
equipment, get help on tax preparation or go to a shelter in
case of an emergency.
Virtually all of the big city conveniences are located within the
community. Residents will find supermarkets, hardware stores,
pharmacies, restaurants, banking, and a host of other commercial
services, plus a post office, churches for all denominations, a
40,000-volume library and more.
With 7,169 seats, the Sundome Center for the Performing Arts is the
world’s largest single-level auditorium. The center serves as a cultural
hub for the West Valley and offers a wide array of entertainment
year-round, from Las Vegas caliber headliners to symphony concerts,
ballet performances to the country music sounds of Nashville.
Outstanding health and medical services and facilities are also situated
within Sun City West, including the Del E. Webb Memorial Hospital which
maintains the Louisa Kellam Center for Women’s Health, which provides
intergenerational services to the health care needs of women and serves
as the centerpiece of the hospital’s $46.5 million expansion program.
Sun City West has grown into a paradise of the southwest. The community
is pleased to celebrate 25 years of incomparable living in the Valley of
the Sun.
