SUN CITY by Del Webb

Nation’s most famous retirement city continues to thrive!

Sun City, a master-planned retirement community established and built by the Del Webb Corp., is the largest retirement community in the nation.

The community, which opened in January 1960, is world-famous for its active-adult retirement lifestyle and has set the standard for other retirement communities to follow. The community is age-restricted with the requirement of one resident must be at least 55 years of age and no permanent resident under the age of 19.

Sun City is self-contained with many shopping centers and restaurants offering a wide variety of stores and services. The town is unincorporated and depends upon Maricopa County for services such as law enforcement, street repairs, and zoning protection. Fire protection is provided by the Sun City Fire District.

The Recreation Centers of Sun City, Inc., a private corporation, is responsible for recreational amenities in Sun City; the Sun City Home Owners Association works with county and state agencies on such issues as zoning and transportation; the Sun City Taxpayers Association keeps a close watch on such issues as taxes and utility rates. The Sun City Visitors Center at 99th Avenue and Bell Road, which offers prospective residents brochures and other helpful information, is operated by the Sun City Ambassadors, a non-profit corporation made up of volunteers.

Eleven golf courses, including three country clubs, and seven recreation centers in Sun City provide swimming, tennis, bowling and numerous other activities.  The Lakeview Recreation Center even has a lake for fishing and limited boating.

Volunteers are a mainstay in Sun City and the community is known as the “City of Volunteers.”

The Sun City PRIDES is a non-profit corporation which assists Maricopa County in keeping Sun City clean.

Police protection is provided by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, augmented by members of the Sheriff’s Posse of Sun City – men and women who volunteer their services 24 hours a day. The Posse’s primary objective is to prevent crime through neighborhood patrols.

A number of civic organizations have assumed the responsibility of keeping an eye over issues that affect the community.
